INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS
International Day of Older Persons Celebration at Sabarigiri College
OCTOBER 1, 2024
On October 1, 2024, Sabarigiri College celebrated International Day of Older Persons, aligning with the global theme: “Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide.” This day, designated by the United Nations in December 1990, emphasizes understanding, respecting, and supporting the contributions and rights of older individuals in society.
Population ageing is a significant global trend reshaping communities. The day serves to highlight the need for promoting the well-being and dignity of older persons, addressing issues like age discrimination, healthcare access, and the creation of supportive environments. It also celebrates the achievements of older adults and their active participation in social, economic, and political spheres.
At Sabarigiri College, NSS volunteers, under the guidance of NSS Coordinator Jaseena Miss, marked the occasion by taking an oath to affirm their commitment to the care and support of older individuals. The pledge, led by NSS volunteer Ameena, emphasized the importance of treating older people with dignity and ensuring their well-being. This thoughtful initiative reflects the college’s dedication to fostering awareness and responsibility towards the older generation, encouraging a culture of respect and care in the community.
