MAGICAL MANGROVES: AN AWARENESS CLASS
On March 6, 2025, Sabarigiri College of Education hosted an engaging and informative session titled "Magical Mangroves" in collaboration with WWF-India. The session aimed to raise awareness about the ecological significance of mangrove forests and their crucial role in protecting the environment. The event was led by Anushreedha S.S., Project Officer at WWF-India, and Preethi T., a volunteer from the Magical Mangroves Campaign. Their insights and passion for conservation made the session both educational and thought-provoking.
The session began with an introduction by Aravind, who welcomed the speakers and highlighted their contributions to mangrove conservation. This was followed by a 45-minute talk on the importance of mangrove ecosystems. The speakers explained how mangroves act as natural barriers against coastal erosion, provide habitats for diverse species, and contribute to carbon sequestration. They also emphasized the connection between mangroves and the livelihoods of coastal communities, making it clear why protecting these ecosystems is essential.
A key highlight of the event was the screening of the documentary Marymolude Kandal Jeevitham, which beautifully illustrated the deep connection between people and mangrove forests. The documentary shed light on the challenges faced by those who depend on these ecosystems for survival, reinforcing the urgency of conservation efforts. Following the screening, an interactive quiz competition was conducted with 20 questions on mangrove ecosystems. Participants eagerly tested their knowledge, and winners Silla, Pooja, and Shinu were awarded prizes for their excellent performance.
To conclude the session, Shamnad shared his reflections on the importance of mangrove conservation and how the session had deepened his understanding of environmental responsibility. His words resonated with the audience, leaving a lasting impact. Finally, Kripa delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the speakers, organizers, and participants for making the event a meaningful success. The "Magical Mangroves" session was a perfect blend of learning and engagement, inspiring participants to take action in preserving these vital ecosystems for future generations.
