TEACHING PRACTICE PHASE 1 - SEVENTH WEEK
TEACHING PRACTICE WEEK 7: Monday (15/09/2025 ) to Friday (19/09/2025)
REFLECTION ON SCHOOL EXPERIENCE
Day 33 : Monday (15/09/2025)
We reached school by 9:30 am and signed the attendance register. Today was a special day as three important events were organized, starting with a special school assembly. Everyone was excited because the school recreated Teachers’ Day, which had fallen on a holiday. Around 90 students dressed up as teachers, wearing sarees and formal attire, and were given classes and subjects to teach. It was wonderful to see the little ones take on the role of teachers with such enthusiasm.
The assembly began with a prayer, followed by the Headmaster’s welcome speech. He also conveyed his best wishes to all student teachers. PTA members, the school principal, and several guests graced the stage. The second event was an awareness class led by a health department officer on Amebic Meningoencephalitis and Jaundice, as many recent cases had been reported in nearby areas. In fact, Edamulackal GHSS had been closed since Onam vacation due to a jaundice outbreak. The officer explained the symptoms of amebic meningoencephalitis, the modes of transmission, and the importance of maintaining hygiene—such as drinking boiled water, chlorinating wells, and keeping surroundings clean. The session was highly informative.
The third event was the sports kit distribution under the STARS scheme. BRC members officially handed over the kits to the school, which were received by our HM Shyju Sir, staff secretary Aneesh Sir, and Sumathy Teacher.
Since the assembly was long, class hours were rescheduled. Each class became extra special as student teachers took charge of teaching today. I was assigned the duty of capturing all these moments and preparing a video for the school. From pre-primary to 10th standard, students actively engaged in teaching, and many displayed remarkable skills in classroom management.
The school dispersed at 3:00 pm. Afterwards, a meeting was held for student teachers to share their experiences, and the staff gave us small gifts as tokens of love. Later, a staff meeting was conducted to discuss remedial teaching plans and the upcoming school Kalolsavam. After tea, we signed the attendance register and left school.
Day 34 – Tuesday (16/09/2025)
We reached school by 9:30 am, signed the attendance register, and settled in our allotted classrooms. From the very beginning, the school was filled with music, dance, and enthusiastic voices as the preparations for Kalolsavam were in full swing. The lively atmosphere was contagious, and I also assisted some students in their practice sessions.
During the 2nd and 3rd periods, I got substitutions in classes 6 and 7 respectively. Later, during the lunch break, I helped in serving food to the students, which has now become one of our regular duties.
One of the most exciting parts of the day was getting a chance to use a microscope, which was available to us only for that day. Since the plant cell is an important topic in the 8th standard syllabus, I decided to make the best use of this opportunity. I prepared a thin section of a plant stem, stained it carefully, and mounted the slide. During the 6th period, I went to class 8B and asked the teacher for permission to demonstrate the slide to the students.
Although there were only a few students present—since many were busy with Kalolsavam practice and regular classes were not fully going on—I still took the chance to explain the procedure. I described how I had prepared the section, stained it, and mounted it on the slide. Then, I allowed students one by one to observe the cells through the microscope.
The students were curious and excited to see the plant cells with their own eyes. Even though some students kept moving in and out of the class due to practice sessions, those who observed the slide showed great enthusiasm and shared what they had seen. It was a new and engaging experience for them, and I felt happy to have given them a practical introduction to microscopic study.
In the 7th period, I had a substitution in concerned class 8B so i taught topic "Scientists who contributed to cell theory and its concepts". After the school dispersed at the end of the day, we signed the attendance register and left
Day 35 – Wednesday (17/09/2025)
We reached school by 9:30 am and signed the attendance register. From the morning, Kalolsavam practices and competitions were going on. Many writing competitions and quizzes were scheduled for the day.
I was assigned duty during the 3rd period to assist teachers in conducting the Mathematics Quiz for high school students. The winners were: First Prize – Beegum Swaliha (10C) , Second Prize – Sreelakshmi and Devanda. These quizzes were part of the school-level Science Fest.
During lunch break, we served lunch to the students. In the afternoon, I was assigned to take over class 2 as their teacher was on leave. It was quite a different experience to take care of such small children. However, I managed to keep them engaged by playing games, encouraging them to draw, and teaching them songs. The children were very lively, and the experience gave me a new perspective on handling lower primary classes.
After the national anthem, the school dispersed. We signed the attendance register and left.
Day 36 & 37 – Thursday & Friday (18–19/09/2025)
All teacher trainees, including myself, had KTET exams on these two days, so we took leave from school. Meanwhile, the school Kalolsavam was held, and unfortunately, we missed witnessing our students’ performances. However, I was assigned documentation duty, so I coordinated with the school and prepared a complete video of the Kalolsavam.
CURRICULAR AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
During this week, I taught students of 8th standard using the prepared teaching manual from their respective chapter. For 8th standard students, I handled topic from the chapter Cell and cell clusters, which included the Scientists who contributed to cell theory and its concepts . Appropriate teaching aids like slides, videos etc were used. Reflective journal for the week was also completed.
EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
As part of extracurricular activities, many quizzes have taken place as part of school science fest. Writing competition and drawing competition held . Overall, the week was productive with effective active student engagement and vibrant school activities.
OVERALL REFLECTION ON CLASSROOM EXPERIENCE
The students of Class 8 were given a teaching manual-oriented, activity based classroom experience. one teaching manuals were completed effectively. The topic taught during this week was "Scientists who contributed to cell theory and its concepts." from the chapter " Cell and Cell Clusters" of 8th class students. The students actively participated in discussions and classroom activities related to these topics. In addition to classroom teaching, follow-up work was given to reinforce the concepts taught.
